I must have been about 22 when this I.D. photo was taken. I remember I gave my "religion" as existentialist, and they wrote down "Church of England" without a pause.

I include this snap of Joe Lakatos (left) not because of any special friendship. As a recruit, he distinguished himself as a fast learner and a reliable team player.

The last time I saw him was at a reunion in a pub on Ludgate Circus long after I had been promoted out of Support Troop and he had transfered to the Parachute Regiment. It was a terrible shock to hear that he drowned on a training exercise.
