Michael's great grandparents (Sidney and Jessica) and their children in the sidecar of what was the family vehicle before they bought a car.

Great grandfather Sidney was an inspector of schools. He died on February 16, 1934.

In the sidecar (from left) are Great Uncle Sid, Great Aunt Alice, Great Uncle Edwin and Fred (Michael's grandfather).

Fred was born in 1906. Great Uncle Sid was born in 1913. Both are shown wearing school uniforms, and Fred left school at 14, so the photo was taken around 1920.

Alice Margaret Burgess looks surprisingly mature considering that she was born after Fred. She was born in October, 1908, with spina bifeda and was not expected to survive beyond age 21.

She not only confounded these expectations but pursued a distinguished career in the Inland Revenue. On July 20, 2000, aged 91, she died at 10:40 a.m. in an Ipswich nursing home where she had lived many years.
