At the events such as The Taste of National City, Burgess was a very approachable figure. In this photo he's having a chat with the San Diego Port Commissioner Jess Van Deventer. The figure in the background wearing white shirt and sunglasses is Congressman Filner's beloved bag man Al Alvarado.

Two news reporters won Press Club awards for investigative reporting on two different years during Burgess's tenure. Oddly enough, both prizewinning stories exposed poor management at the Otay Water District.
The Star-News editorial staff scooped some major awards at the San Diego Press Club J-Awards banquet Oct. 24. Editor Michael C. Burgess, from left, took third place (Non-Daily Newspapers-Essay / Commentary / Opinion) with "Is that a Banana in your Pocket?" Sports and entertainment editor Phillip Brents took second place (Non-Daily Newspapers-Reviews) with "Clarks Bully Stands as a Brutal Testament to our Times" and third place (Non-Daily Newspapers-Sports Writing) with "Roller Hockey Madness." Staff writer Laura Mallgren scooped first place (Non - Daily Newspapers - Investigative Reporting) with "Otay Water Board Wastes Millions on Legal Bills."
